What is Stained Glass?

A Common Misconception

Let’s dive into stained glass! Surprising fact, the glass isn't actually “stained.” The amazing colors in stained glass are created by adding specific extras, like copper or gold, during the manufacturing process, giving each sheet its unique color.  The colors won't fade or wear off.... ever!  As a decorative window, a suncatcher, or a standalone piece of art, stained glass brings a striking visual impact to any space. From Roman days, the Church of England, Colonial America, and into modern times - window glass has been an important part of architecture.

Local Connections

One of the longest-standing producers of this beautiful material is right here in the USA—Kokomo Opalescent Glass. When it comes to stained glass, Kokomo Opalescent Glass (KOG) has been making art glass for over 130 years. Established in the late 1800s, KOG has been a top choice of artists and crafters alike. They were an early supplier to Louis Comfort Tiffany and have been a trusted source for the restoration of cultural art work for decades. If you're ever in Kokomo, take the tour!

Living in Kokomo, Indiana, I’ve had the pleasure of using KOG glass in my projects, and I even have
KOG glass originals in my home! The personal connection adds an extra warm and fuzzy feeling to each piece I make.

Stained Glass Today

Stained glass may have its roots in the past, but it’s very much alive in the modern art world. Today’s artists are experimenting with new designs, colors, and techniques, making stained glass a versatile medium for any space, whether it’s a large window, a matching pair of stained glass panels or a small decorative piece. USA-based stained glass manufacturers play a key role by providing high-quality glass products, reflecting American artists' craftsmanship and creativity.
